Title : Retrospective Observational study to assess clinical characteristics, prescription pattern and concurrent diagnosis in headache patients attending Tertiary Care Hospital

Abstract :

Background: Headache is a common neurological disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. This study aimed to assess clinical characteristics, prescription pattern and concurrent diagnosis in headache patients attending Tertiary Care Hospital. Method: This is a retrospective, observational study of anonymised data from a data base of JP SUPER SPECIALITY HOSPITAL NEURO MEDICAL CENTER, TIRUPATI-517502, Andhra Pradesh, India, over the 3 months period from January 2023 to March 2023. The sample contained was 290 persons over the 3 months study period. It has detailed data on: in- and outpatients, based on the ICHD-3 diagnosis. Results: Among 290 patients, 179 were females, patients who suffered with headaches were mostly in the age group of 18-28. ‘Chronic Headache’ was the common type headache which was seen in 162 patients. Fibromyalgia was the major concurrent disease found in 89 headache patients. The major class of drugs prescribed was NSAIDS to 281 patients with common headache, whereas anti-migraine drugs like Triptans were specifically prescribed for the migraine patients. “Headache associated with periorbital pain holocranial throbbing type” was the major complaint received from 134 patients of study population during this study period. Conclusion: The most prevalent age group was18-28, in which females were dominant. ‘Chronic Headache’ was the common type of headache. Fibromyalgia was the major concurrent disease. NSAIDs were the major class of drugs prescribed for the patients with common headache, whereas Anti-migraine drugs like Triptans were specifically prescribed for the migraine patients.
